《女作家与谋杀案》是一部非常著名且持续时间很久的美国经典侦探剧集。这部剧集共12季264集，从1984年开始在美国CBS电视台一直播放至1996年，之后又于1997年至2003年间陆续推出四部电视电影。Angela Lansbury扮演主角推理小说家兼业余侦探Jessica Flectcher，她在50岁左右失去了丈夫， 却成为了一名非常成功的推理小说作家，并且没有让成功冲昏头脑，拒绝了声望和金钱的诱惑，住在缅因州一个叫Cabot Cove的安逸的沿海小镇，和自己的老朋友们保持来往。在大部分剧集里，Jessica总能卷入一些离奇谋杀案的调查。警察们总是把表面上看来嫌疑很大的人抓走，而Jessica却觉得凶手另有其人。通过向每个嫌疑人询问一些其他人都想不到的问题，她总能找到真正的凶手，并在每集最后五分钟与之对峙，通过自己的推理指出对方的罪行。一部分凶手能够在Jessica的劝解下主动坦白罪行并向警方自首，也有一部分凶手会试图杀人灭口，而这时埋伏在暗处的警方人员便会及时赶到，将凶手当场逮捕。
本剧叙述在野党影子内阁成员Jim Hacker在帮助本党大选获胜之后得到行政事务部（DAA）部长的职务，从此开始面对以部秘书Sir Humphrey Appleby为首的公务员体系，而他的公派私人秘书、同属公务员的Bernard则夹在了当中。在Hacker所代表的政客以及Appleby所代表的公务员之间因施政而发生的种种冲突之中，两人的关系不停地发生变化，既有互相捂盖子，也有互相揭老底。与此同时，英国政治体制（包括政党体制和公务员体制）中的种种不为外人所知弊端和黑幕也展现在观众眼前。当然所有这些都是通过大量喜剧情节和台词展开。在本系列后半部分的《Yes Prime Minister》中，Hacker通过党内角力当上了首相，而Appleby也已先他一步当上了首相秘书，两人的故事移到唐宁街10号继续展开。

Mrs. Brown's Boys became a runaway success upon its initial broadcast. Every episode aired won its timeslot for RTÉ, with an average viewership of 753,500 in January, 2011. One episode's rating beat that of RTÉ's own ratings giant The Late Late Show, with 856,000 viewers tuning in to watch. However, critics disliked the show. "The whole thing is entirely predicated on viewers finding a man dressed as a foul-mouthed elderly woman intrinsically funny," noted Bernice Harrison in the Irish Times. "If you do, you’re away in a hack (and the viewing figures are astronomical), but if you don’t, and you think that died out with Les Dawson and Dick Emery, then it’s a long half-hour." The Irish Independent said that Mrs Brown's Boys was the type of TV programme that "that makes you vaguely embarrassed to be Irish". The Daily Telegraph's Sam Richards noted that show's comedy has a "rudimentary nature", consisting of "an old-fashioned blend of silly voices and slapstick, played out in front of a live studio audience who collapse into giggles at the mere mention of the word “willy”.
Detective Inspector John Rebus is a hard drinking, unkempt, womanizing police officer whose job is his whole life. He is the most senior and most experienced DI at his station. He has a mysterious past that his partner DS Siobhan Clarke learns about from time to time through various comments Rebus makes. She is a young woman who wants to succeed, but does not have much of a personal life. She feels being paired with Rebus jeopardizes her career because of his unorthodox methods, but she is also fascinated by the man and is extremely loyal. DI Rebus' boss is Chief Superintendent Templar, a woman who was one of Rebus' lovers in a distant past. Their relationship is now one where they barely tolerate each other.
